What’s this part of a castle called?

Shelly890 asked:

You know how there’s sometimes a tunnel the you can walk through in a castle, attached to it, but still outside?

Like, in the second Harry Potter movie, when they drive the car to Hogwarts and it drives itself through a part of the castle before disappearing into the forest.

What’s that part of the castle called? It’s not a courtyard exactly.

It’s either the barbican or the bailey, but I think you mean the bailey, which is the open space inside the curtain wall but outside the keep. The barbican is the building that’s usually part of the curtain wall and houses the portcullis and/or drawbridge.

There can be a hidden gate, called a postern.

The allure or wall-walk: passage behind the parapet of a castle wall is not at ground level though, you didn’t mention if the area you’re looking for is at ground level.

You are most likely talking about an arcade.
