Where are Hogwarts’ facilities?

a_lantus asked:

I’ve been watching alot of Harry Potter lately. I think Hogwarts is a fantasic bit of castle. I’ve looked at alot of pictures of it, and I like to draw it/sections of it. but of everything I’ve seen of Hogwarts, there isn’t a single actual bathroom bathroom for normal students. HP is probably one of the first movies I’ve seen where characters actually have somewhere to go to the toilet. But where do they wash?
The prefects have got a bathroom, with a swimming pool size tub(guessing one for each gender), but what about regular students?
You’ve got the bathrooms, with toilets and sinks- out in the school, round the grounds sort of thing. But looking at the Dorms, there’s no toilet or showers or anything.
Being students are there for most of the year, the school would have to have some sort of washroom facility - I would have thought one per gender per house.
What do you think?
Is there some secret corridor off the boys and girls dorms that leads to the bathroom?
Are there more swimming pool tubs set up around the grounds for the students?
Are there Shower rooms off of the toilets in the grounds?
Or in the change room at the quiditch pitch?
Or do the kids bathe in the lake for the seven years they’re at Hogwarts?
Its wierd, but one of those things you just pick up… :)

They never really explain this in the movies (or really in the books), but if you watch closely in the 4th movie (Goblet of Fire) you can see when Harry and Ron are getting ready for the Yule Ball, Harry walks into the shot through a door in the dormitories holding his tootchbrush and other bathroom items. So you have to assume that there are bathrooms in each house dormitories and like you said, presumably one boys and one girls for each house.

There is no secret corridor from the dorms to bathrooms, that would definitely have been mentioned in the books and movies if they existed.

The swimming pool tubs were only in the prefect bathroom, other bathrooms did not have those. Prefects got a few extra perks like that because of their position.

I doubt that there are shower rooms in either the regular castle bathrooms or the quiddicth changing rooms.

There is also a girls bathroom on the 2nd floor (where they fight the troll in book 1) and there’s also Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom on the third floor. These are corridor style bathrooms, the type you find in any high school. I’m quite sure that JK Rowling did not intend to imply that for the 7 years they lived there the students did not have daily hygienic practices, just that there was nothing noteworthy that happened while bathing, toileting or grooming. The few times bathrooms are mentioned is when something happens there. (Trolls ghosts and Hidden chambers, etc) Showers in the quiddich changing rooms are specifically mentioned in a couple of the books. Both Oliver Wood and Ron Weasley are mentioned as still being in them and trying to “drown” themselves after a bad match.
